Resolution: Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forum
Adopted on May 7, 2002

Whereas, the binational Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region has long benefitted from outstanding regional institutions dedicated to improving environmental health, economic well being and quality of life; and

Whereas, four such publicly-funded, binational institutions (i.e., Great Lakes Commission, Great Lakes Fishery Commission, International Joint Commission, Council of Great Lakes Governors) have both individually and collectively made substantial contributions to this region; and

Whereas, despite a history of coordination and cooperation, the commissioners/principals of these institutions have never convened – in one place at one time – to discuss and act on mutual interests; and

Whereas, such a meeting would offer an excellent opportunity to discuss common interests and express resolve to work together; and

Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Great Lakes Commission formally endorses the notion of a "Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forum" that will bring these four institutions together for policy presentations, discussion and action on matters of common concern; and

Be It Further Resolved, the Great Lakes Commission direct its staff leadership to consult with its regional counterparts to explore this opportunity; and

Be It Finally Resolved, that the Great Lakes Commission offer its support, leadership and resources, as available, for the conduct of such an event at the earliest possible time.

Unanimously adopted by the Great Lakes Commission at its Semiannual Meeting, May 7, 2002 in Québec City, Québec.
