Action items:
- Staff was directed to prepare an “issue brief” on nutrient management and the problem of increased nutrient loadings to the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence River basin. This issue brief will also review and describe nutrient management and rural land management practices and programs both inside and outside the Great Lake-St. Lawrence River basin. This issue brief will be completed prior to the 2011 Semiannual meeting.
- The Commission approved an action request to re-establish an Emergency Preparedness Task Force to review the status of preparedness and response programs for oil and hazardous materials spills in the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence River basin for the purpose of developing a report (or briefing paper) outlining recommendations for improving/enhancing the region’s state of preparedness to protect Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River water quality.

The eight member states of the Great Lakes Commission have endorsed six policy resolutions that will guide the organization's planning, research and advocacy activities in the coming months. Topics include support for/ comments on proposed federal ecosystem restoration legislation; use of sound science in coastal wetlands policy;
development of restoration goals for Areas of Concern clean-up; the need for a basinwide study of land use/ water quality impacts; distribution of port security funds; and funding for the Great Lakes Water Level Observation Network.
