The Great Lakes Commission, in conjunction with the Northeast-Midwest Institute, will host the special annual event, Great Lakes Day in Washington, on Wednesday, March 7, 2007. Elected and appointed officials from Great Lakes states, and stakeholders from across the region will join with members of Congress and staff to look closely at the needs of the Great Lakes region and opportunities for action on a legislative agenda. Join us in Washington as we discuss the issues facing the world's greatest freshwater resource.

The day's events will begin with the Great Lakes Congressional Reception from 8:00-9:15 a.m. in Room B-339/340 of the Rayburn House Office Building, featuring remarks by invited members of Congress. A continental breakfast will be served. In the afternoon, teams of representatives from the Great Lakes Commission and other stakeholders from across the region will conduct a series of congressional office visits.

The Great Lakes Commission, chaired by Lt. Gov. John Cherry (Mich.), is a nonpartisan, binational compact agency established under state and U.S. federal law and dedicated to promoting a strong economy, healthy environment and high quality of life for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region and its residents. The Commission consists of governors' appointees, state legislators, and agency officials from its eight member states. Associate membership for Ontario and Québec was established through the signing of a "Declaration of Partnership." The Commission maintains a formal Observer program involving U.S. and Canadian federal agencies, tribal authorities, binational agencies and other regional interests. The Commission offices are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
