GIS Online
Introduction
The Great Lakes GIS
Online project builds upon the regional
Great Lakes Information Network (GLIN)
to provide Internet-based access to, and online mapping capability for, a variety of consistent
spatial data layers covering the Great Lakes Basin. The Great Lakes GIS Online project will provide
a solid foundation for interagency spatial data sharing and collaboration across the binational region.
Yet for all the advantages these mapping capabilities offer, beyond them lies an even more valuable
goal. A mapping tool like Great Lakes GIS Online requires consistent and accurate spatial data from
a variety of sources throughout the region. One of the greatest and most cost-effective long-term
benefits that the Great Lakes GIS Online project will provide is institutionalization of a mechanism
to build regional cooperation and collaboration in inter-agency spatial data sharing over the Internet.
