Introduction
Through this 18-month project supported by the Great Lakes Protection Fund, the Great Lakes Commission will prepare a water conservation toolkit to assist public water suppliers and state and provincial agencies in meeting the water conservation requirements to be developed in the system contemplated under the Annex 2001 to the Great Lakes Charter (PDF). The Commission will survey water conservation practice and identify best available technologies and practices. Project products will then be made available in an online directory and this project website.

This project builds upon and complements the Water Resources Management Decision Support System project and in particular, the work of the Water Withdrawal and Use Technical Subcommittee (TSC), which conducted an initial review of water conservation programs at the state and provincial level.

An advisory committee (PDF), consisting of representatives from state, provincial and federal agencies, and associations working on water conservation will provide guidance and oversight to Great Lakes Commission staff in the conduct of the project.
