Create Your Own Query

Use this tab to obtain customized search results. For example, if you’re interested in Great Lakes surface water withdrawals for public supply for all jurisdictions and all basins, select a year and unit of measurement, and then query for 1) all jurisdictions; 2) all basins; 3) Great Lakes surface water; 4) public supply. After viewing the results, click on Download this Result to Excel to download the data to an Excel file.

The Water Use Database distinguishes between a blank field (value is not reported) and a value of zero (value is known to be zero). For this reason, the resulting Excel file may include records which contain a zero in the field showing Withdrawal Amount, Interbasin Diversion, Intrabasin Diversion, or Consumptive Use. This indicates that the amount is known to be zero.

This type of search is an alternative to paging through the .pdf files for the specific figure or figures for which you’re looking. Although only one year can be queried at a time, you can combine Excel files to create a single file which tracks water use trends from year to year for a specific jurisdiction, basin, and/or water use category.
